Foster Dogs
When possible, TCD opens our doors to homeless dogs that need a soft place to land before they find their forever homes. We work alongside official 501c non-profit rescues such as The American Belgian Malinois Rescue (ABMR) to pull dogs that are nearing their euthanasia dates from shelters due to lack of space and resources.
We provide housing, training, transportation, food, and more to these dogs while their respective rescues work hard to network and vet potential adopters to ensure that these awesome dogs never wind up in a situation similar to this again. Meet some of our fosters and their stories below!

Rookie
Status: AVAILABLE
New Home: ---
New Name: ---
Rookie is an almost 2 year old, absolutely lovely, purebred Dalmatian (HUA) who is seeking his forever family! Rookie came to us through an unfortunate and unexpected housing change for his family - who loved him dearly and took excellent care of him - but recognized that they were in over their heads and needed help.
Rookie is a typical Dalmatian temperament-wise and any potential adoptive homes will need to show that they understand this breed's standard traits and dietary restrictions. He is incredibly loyal, goofy, and fun loving with his family (us, currently), however he is aloof to strangers and is not interested in being pet or approached by random people he does not know. Rookie is incredibly intelligent and has absolutely phenomenal food drive, so training and working with him has been an absolute breeze. He will do anything for a "Rookie Cookie"! He is friendly with dogs of similar temperament and play style and is currently best friends with our resident Pomeranian mix, Stitch.
Rookie is up-to-date on all vet care and neutered. He is well behaved for grooming and nail care, both house trained and kennel trained, and he walks wonderfully on a leash. He knows sit and down and is a treat-catching expert!
His ideal home will be with an individual or quiet family (no chaotic small children running amok) who will spend lots of time with him and let him lay around on their couch or in their bed with them. He would love a daily walk around the block and he has spurts of playful energy throughout the day (he is just a puppy after all!), but he really just wants to snuggle up on the couch and watch movies with his favorite chosen people.
Like all of our fosters, Rookie will come with lifetime training assistance and free boarding if his owners are local to us. Also like all of our fosters, Rookie is NOT leaving us on a "first-come-first-serve" basis. We will evaluate all incoming inquiries and choose the best possible placement for him to thrive and live the happiest life he can live. There is no adoption fee for Rookie, but you need to convince US that you are truly the perfect home for him.

ABMR Odie
Status: ADOPTED
New Home: Michigan
New Name: Still Odie! <3
Odie came from a shelter in Kansas City where he had been neutered a week prior to ABMR pulling him, however his surgery site had not been properly cared for post-procedure. When Kali, TCD Owner/Head Trainer, arrived to pick him up from the shelter his scrotum had split open and was profusely bleeding all over the shelter lobby! While trying to load him in the car for his freedom ride Odie attempted to bite Kali, but she could tell it was just a combination of fear and pain. She immediately rushed him to the emergency vet hospital at Kansas State University in Manhatten where he stayed for three days on heavy antibiotics. When the antibiotics took hold he was cleared for a scrotal ablation surgery to remove the damaged tissue and remaining infection. Odie spent his time there terrorizing the vet students with his spicy attitude, but he had won the heart of his surgeon who – like Kali – had extensive working dog experience and was able to see through his tough exterior to his true personality underneath. She almost adopted him herself!
Kali headed back to K State to pick him up after his surgery and even heavily drugged (or maybe because of it) she could tell he was feeling a lot better! He spent the next two weeks on crate rest while he healed up and was slowly weaned off of his sedatives that kept him calm and able to rest. Its hard to keep a good Malinois down!
Once a bond and a level of trust was formed between Odie and Kali his true personality blossomed. This was a confident, energetic, young dog that when asked to jump didn’t bother wasting time with asking “how high?”. Understandably he was distrustful of new people, especially men, so when a potential adopter from Michigan said he wanted to drive all the way down here to meet him we were a bit nervous. Truthfully, because Odie was one of the more “difficult” dogs we had taken on, we were hoping for a closer adoption so that if something didn’t work out Odie could easily return to Top City Dogs. Thankfully it was love at first sight for Odie and his new owner – shocking all of us – and after a few group walks and training sessions together he hopped right in his Jeep with an “Are you ready to go home yet?!” look on his face.
Odie alllllmost “Foster Failed” with us and stayed here permanently, but if he had that would have meant the end of our ability to foster more dogs in the future due to lack of space. We are so happy for him, even if Kali was a bit misty eyed as they pulled out of the driveway (they’d been through a lot!), and Odie and his new family are completely inseparable!

ABMR Navi
Status: ADOPTED
New Home: Ontario, Canada
New Name: Ooh La La
Navi came to us from a high-kill shelter in Wichita where she was owner-surrendered and was scheduled to be euthanized on the day after Christmas 2022. Frankie/Havoc had only just left our care a few days prior and we just couldn’t let her go, so we stepped up as fosters for her immediately and she filled Havoc’s space. She was tagged, bailed out, and transported up to us from Wichita by another ABMR foster (thanks Deb!) and was immediately named for the holiday that all of this happened around – Feliz NAVIdad.
Navi spent about a month with us learning some basic manners and life skills before her picture on the ABMR website captivated her new owner, who personally drove all the way from Ontario, Canada to come get her! Navi, now named Ooh La La, lives north of the boarder with her professional dog trainer partner! She has three doggy siblings – another Malinois, a Lakenois, and a Groenendael - and she has continued onto advanced training in order to compete in Agility alongside her new handler. We couldn’t be happier for Ooh La La – she really hit the jackpot!

AMBR Frankie
Status: ADOPTED
Breed: Belgian Malinois
New Home: Tennessee
New Name: Havoc
Frankie was a stray in Texas who was picked up by animal control and, upon arriving at the shelter down there, was diagnosed with kennel cough. Due to the fear of it spreading to the rest of the shelter Frankie was put on the list to be immediately euthanized - his life scheduled to be ended just for catching a cold! : ‘ (
The American Belgian Malinois Rescue swooped in to save the day and pulled Frankie from the shelter. There was a lack of foster homes in the area, but Mandie Biester – owner of The Dirty Dog here in Topeka – stepped up and created a space for him at her boarding facility so he hopped on an ABMR volunteer transport chain and made his way north to the Sunflower State. Frankie spent about a month with The Dirty Dog crew while ABMR did their best to find him a permanent adopter, but there just wasn’t anyone coming forward who could properly fulfil his needs. As time passed Frankie began struggling in the large kennel environment and he was beginning to display some behavior issues there, so this is where we at Top City Dogs stepped in.
Frankie came to our much smaller facility to decompress and work on training out some of those bad habits he had settled into. We had Frankie here with us for another three weeks or so when the perfect adopter for him came forward! Frankie, now named Havoc by his new dad, hopped on another trans-state transport chain and made his way to his new home in Tennessee. Havoc now lives with a single older gentleman who is also a prior working dog trainer and experienced Malinois owner. He has an entire farm to call his own, complete with an in-ground pool that he uses daily, and a play-style-compatible German Shepherd neighbor who comes over to visit regularly. He is one lucky dog!
